Children create Christmas hampers filled with gifts

Highgate Hill House School, a co-educational school for children with special educational needs aged 5 to 16 years, near Holsworthy, has been helping pupils to spread the joy this Christmas, by creating their very own Christmas hampers to take home to their families.

The hampers contain a variety of edible, decorative and functional items created by the school's 'Secondary 2' class. Contents include pickled shallots, candle holders, Christmas decorations, chilli jam, stained glass window biscuits, mince pies and hot chocolate reindeers.

Secondary 2 class Teacher Paul, said: “The children get a huge sense of satisfaction and achievement out of making the contents of the hampers themselves, much more so than if they'd simply bought gifts. We've covered various curriculum areas whilst making the hampers, including Maths, Practical Skills, Home Economics and Art, and they've worked really well together as a team to accomplish everything we planned”.

Sir Peter Birkett, School Founder, added: “This has been a real confidence boost for the children – if we'd said to them at the start of term that they'd be taking home a Christmas hamper they'd made by themselves to share with their families, I don't think they would have believed us! They really do look great, they should be very proud.”
