Highgate Hill House School shortlisted for prestigious national award

Highgate Hill House School, a co-educational school for children with special educational needs aged 5 to 16 years, near Holsworthy, has been announced as an award finalist at the prestigious ISA Awards 2022, to be held at Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, Warwickshire in November.

The Independent Schools Association Awards is an annual event, which celebrates the success of member schools, and recognises the breadth of quality and provision in independent education across the country.

Highgate Hill House School has been announced as a finalist in the ‘ISA Award for Excellence and Innovation in Equality Diversity and Inclusion’ category, alongside two other schools – Bishop Challoner School and Hendon Prep School. The shortlisting focused on an adapted piece of bush craft kit – a fire steel (a man-made flint) for lighting fires – which Practical Skills Instructors Ollie Norton and Kim Tester adapted to ensure that two pupils, who have a limited range of strength and motion, could take part in the activity and use it to light a fire safely for the first time.

Headteacher Gina Wagland, said: “Our children have a range of social, emotional and mental health needs, and all learn in different ways. We have created a school which is flexible and adaptable to the individual needs of each child, and being shortlisted for this award nomination confirms that”.

Tracey Storey, CEO of the Melrose Education Group, which Highgate Hill House

School has recently joined, added: “I am so pleased that the hard work and dedication of our staff has been recognised in this way, they consistently go the extra mile to ensure that pupils are able to make the most of opportunities presented to them”.
