Meet Andrew German, our new School Bursar
We thought it would be nice to ask Andrew to take part in a Q&A session so that you can get to know him a little better as he started with Highgate Hill House School during the Coronavirus epidemic.
1) Tell us about your previous roles before joining HHHS.
My career started in the hospitality sector after several years at Plymouth College and training in Switzerland. Returning to work at the London Hilton, progressing through various roles and hotel groups leading to years of Hotel Management. Finally moving to the contract sector working as a Regional Operations Manager for a large facilities company.
A change of direction in 2017 moving to education as, School Business Manager in a Primary School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire where I spent three years before relocating back to the South West and joining HHHS.
2) What does your role as School Bursar involve?
A School Bursar is very diverse role; I am responsible for all non-educational operations within the school supporting the Head Teacher ensuring that it operates efficiently and within budget, looking after the wellbeing of our staff and pupils creating a safe place for all to work and learn with sufficient resources and facilities. I have responsibility for purchasing, expenditure, Health & Safety, maintenance, personnel, payroll, catering, cleaning and office administration which is where my previous mix of corporate operational experience helps.
3) You've joined the school at a challenging time, how are you finding it so far?
A new role is always a challenge and starting in the current situation has certainly been a different experience. On joining I had a great welcome from the staff and already feel part of the team. The challenge in the first few months is always getting to understand how the school operates, who is who and of course the layout of the building – it all takes time, but I do thrive on a challenge!
4) What would we be surprised to learn about you?
A proud childhood memory was learning that my father went to America to work on the guidance system of Apollo 11, the mission that put man on the moon. I lived in New Zealand for six years and went to Napier Boys’ High School. Whilst considering joining the navy I spent a day at sea on HMS Ardent a type 21 frigate which was sadly lost in the Falklands. Like many of us, I enjoy a great curry.
Welcome to Highgate Andrew, we wish you all the best in your new role!
