A pupil at Highgate Hill House School, a co-educational school for children with special educational needs aged 5 to 16 years, near Holsworthy, has given her beach sea glass find a new lease of life.

Pupils enjoy regular trips to the beach thanks to the school’s enviable location, and are encouraged to look for materials they can use or repurpose in some way for projects back at school. Kitty, who particularly enjoys the creative opportunities available to her at Highgate, decided to make two plant-themed framed pictures using sea glass that she found on a local beach.

Learning Support Assistant Jess, who supported Kitty with this particular project, said: “The process of hunting for sea glass is very addictive. Once you start finding it, you just want to keep finding more! It’s a very peaceful process too, our pupils find it very relaxing, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the beach”.

Sir Peter Birkett, School Founder, added: “Our pupils have helped out on various beach cleans in recent years, we encourage them to get involved in doing their bit for the environment whenever possible. Kitty has taken it one step further however, by creating two exquisite pieces of art from her hoard”.
